Learning how to Skate

This article is made to give guidance on what I, personally, would do if I were to start skateboarding all over again. Theres a few steps to take and things to consider when starting the journy.

Getting a Skateboard

This is probably one of the most important parts of skateboarding, is the skateboard itself. You can get one from Walmart but they are usually really bad and hard to skate, it isnt the best idea but if you dont want to dump money into the hobby, than its a great start. Or theres complete decks you can buy. These have stockish parts but the wood is good and the parts arent the worst. Its a better option than a Walmart deck. A complete deck will cost around $100 roughly. You can get them on different websites or places, such as Zumiez, Skate Warehouse, ccs, and more. The final option, is a lot more expensive. The last option is a complete deck that you build up. Youll choose the parts such as the deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, and hardware. This one is a lot more expensive but will last way longer and be more worth while as well as last way longer. It could cost anywhere from $160 - $200. You can get parts from any website listed before and also skateshops will have the parts needed. But most skaters will start on either a $100 complete deck or a $30 Walmart board.

After getting a Skateboard

Once you get a skateboard, you should also buy a T-Tool, its very important. It can be used to tighten trucks, which makes turning resistance levels different. It can also be used to assemble skateboards and tighten or loosen anything on it. But where should you start when it comes to actually skateboarding? Well you want to be really comfortable riding it before you do tricks. The first thing you do is put a foot in front and one in back, than you push with the back foot. You can rotate your front foot fowards while pushing but when your letting momentum take you, you should twist it back sideways. It will be really hard at first but keep going. To turn youll have to stand sideways on it, feet facing the side of the board. And put some weight on the direction you want to turn in. You can also push your ankles a little down on the side youd like to turn to as well, that will make you turn.

Down the Road

So youve gotten good at riding, and youve become comfortable on the skateboard. The first trick you should learn is the Ollie. Im not going to go into depth about the trick, but ill give a quick description of it. You slam your back foot into the ground while its on the tail, than you jump at the same time. While thats all going on, you twist your ankle sideways, the outer part of your foot should rub on the griptape. After that, you level the skateboard back out by putting your foot back down normally. Eventually you can learn the 180's, Kickflips, boardslides, and grinds.

Tips and Information

Skateboarding will not come easy. You might have to get hurt and build courage but its such an amazing sport. You will almost gaurenteed get hurt, but it doesnt take long to feel better. Some people might make fun or jokes about you for not being amazing. Just brush it off, theres no rules to skateboarding. Most importantly, have fun. If you start to get frustrated and angry, take a break and try something else first than go back to it. Have fun!!!
